Our Difference

Our Approach

“I offer safe, effective, and evidence-based treatment of spine conditions. My approach is to precisely diagnose patient’s, educate them on their specific condition to give them tools to take ownership of it and then guide them through treatment.”

Dr Beer always keeps patient's best interests at the forefront of treatment plans and offers specific treatment based on each patient’s individual background, condition and goals.

Non-Surgical Approach First

“Spinal surgeons should rarely be quick to operate on any patient. In fact, only rarely, in true emergencies, is it appropriate to operate in the first instance.”

We triage patients and have a close therapeutic relationship with highly experienced spinal specialist physiotherapists who, in conjunction with me, assess, diagnose, investigate, educate, and treat our patients promptly.

I have a close relationship with a team of vastly experienced spinal specialist physiotherapists who coordinate initial best practice non-operative management that has a high likelihood of effectiveness in allowing patients to manage their pain without surgery.

Where either non-operative approaches fail, or where a patient is inappropriate for these therapies due to weakness, serious condition or intractable pain, a timely review and discussion of surgical options is arranged.

Cost Efficiencies

We do not have long wait times and offer efficient and timely assessment and management of back/leg and neck/arm pain.

Only patients who have failed appropriate non-operative treatment or have concerning features to their symptoms are then further investigated and reviewed for a surgical opinion.

We have regular multi-disciplinary team meetings to discuss patients' progress and any further treatment/assessments patients need. Only if and when required do patients book in with me for a timely consultation to discuss potential surgical options.

Our Spine Services

We offer comprehensive reconstructive spinal surgery, inline with evidence-based surgical treatments and procedures.

Our key focus is on minimally destructive surgical solutions for:

  • back/leg pain
  • neck/arm pain and
  • deformity

Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery

Where suitable, Dr Beer primarily uses minimally invasive spine surgery (MISS). The benefits of this approach can include:

  • Smaller Incisions: MISS requires smaller incisions, which means less tissue damage and scarring.
  • Reduced Blood Loss: Smaller incisions and less tissue dissection often result in less blood loss during surgery.
  • Faster Recovery: The less invasive nature usually allows for quicker post-operative recovery and a faster return to normal activities.\
  • Lower Risk of Infection: Smaller wounds typically carry a reduced risk of post-surgical infection.
  • Reduced Muscle Damage: Less disruption to the muscles and soft tissues surrounding the spine leads to less post-operative pain and faster healing.
  • Less Pain: Smaller incisions and less tissue disruption generally result in less post-operative pain, often requiring fewer pain medications.
  • Shorter Hospital Stay: Many MISS procedures can be performed on an outpatient basis or require only a short hospital stay.
  • Better Cosmetic Outcome: Smaller scars are generally considered more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Preservation of Spinal Motion: MISS techniques often aim to preserve as much natural anatomy and function as possible, which can result in better long-term spinal motion.
  • Lower Healthcare Costs: Faster recovery and shorter hospital stays may result in lower overall healthcare costs.

Anterior Approach to Spine Surgery

Dr Beer offers highly sub-specialised treatment options include anterior access spinal surgery for total disc replacement or anterior lumbar interbody fusion.

It's important to note that the choice of surgical approach depends on various factors, including the specific spinal condition being treated, the patient's overall health, and the surgeon's expertise.

While the anterior approach may offer several benefits, it is not suitable for all cases. Dr Beer will consider individual patient factors and determine the most appropriate approach to achieve the best possible outcomes.
